THE LEAD:
Second-seeded Elms College used a hot offensive attack to defeat Dean College 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's volleyball tournament on Tuesday evening.
The loss for the Bulldogs ends their season at 12-15 overall, while the Blazers advance to the semifinal round after winning their fifth straight match to improve to 19-4. Elms will host third-seeded Southern Vermont on Friday evening at a time to be determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The host Blazers jumped on Dean early, rolling to a convincing 25-8 win in the opening frame. The Bulldogs regrouped and fought back in the second set but still fell, 25-15.
Set three was the most competitive and was tied at 15-15 after a Kait Anderson (Clinton, Mass.) service ace and the set was still in doubt after Nicole Defosses (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Tara Griffith (Los Angeles, Calif.) teamed up for a block to make it 19-18.
Elms proved to be too much for the Bulldogs, however, as the closed out the match, 25-19, on a Danielle Redding kill.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Redding was the star of the night, totaling a match-best 22 kills on .421 hitting, while Dakota Stewart handed out 30 assists.
Anderson finished with a team-best six kills for Dean, while Melanie Rios-Nevarez (Alta Vega, Puerto Rico) added three.
Samantha Trullo (Chelmsford, Mass.) collected two kills and 11 digs in her final contest for Dean.
