WESTON, Mass. – The Dean College men's volleyball team was defeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play by Regis College on Thursday evening by a final score of 3-0. With the conference loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 6-16 (0-5 GNAC), while the Pride improved to 14-12 (1-3 GNAC).
How it Happened:
-The Bulldogs grabbed the match's first two points in a flash.
Naya Phillip (East Providence, R.I.) and
Antonio Varela (East Providence, R.I.) combined for a strong block at the front of the net. This was followed by a service ace from senior
Hunter Armitage (Westerly, R.I.).
-Despite securing the first two points, Regis fought to score 12 of the match's first 17 points. This included points from Jalen Watt and John Nangle.
-Dean kept the set within five points after kills from Phillip and
Brandon Mimande (East Providence, R.I.). The Rhode Island trip combined for four points in the first set.
-Despite a strong net presence, Dean fell in the first set to the Pride by a final score of 25-14.
-Regis flew into the second set, going on a 12-3 run over the Bulldogs. Half of these points were errors from Dean.
-Dean rallied back into the set with kills from
Noah Allan (Windham, N.H.) and
Rayan Echelh (Revere, Mass.). Mimande also aided their presence at the front of the net with a pair of kills.
-The Pride took five of the final seven points to win set two by a score of 25-14.
-With their playoff hopes on the line, the Bulldogs aggressively pushed into the third set. Armitage resumed action with a service ace, followed by a block from Allan and
Travis Johnson (Taunton, Mass.). Johnson also had half of Dean's first eight points.
-With another kill from Johnson, Dean led the third set early by a score of 8-5.
-However, Regis quickly took over. They went on a 6-1 run to take the lead 11-9.
-
Arthur Felicio (Saugus, Brazil) stopped the scoring chain with a kill of his own. Another Pride error eventually re-tied the game at 11.
-The Bulldogs continued to trade blows with Regis, keeping the margin within one point. Felicio and Johnson led the charge up front, scoring points while forcing consecutive Regis errors.
-After another error from Regis' Adam Bonica, Dean only trailed by a score of 20-19.
