THE LEAD:
Albertus Magnus won its fifth match in a row while equaling their win total from a season ago and the host Falcons got the best of visiting Dean College, 3-0, in non-league women's volleyball action on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set was even early on but three straight kills from Ana Gomez stretched the Albertus lead out and when the Bulldogs committed three hitting errors in a row of their own, they were suddenly down 19-11 before falling, 25-17.
Albertus had their best hitting set of the match in the second but again like the first set, this one was tight early. Dean had the score knotted at 8-8 after an Aminah Tsonga (Plainville, Conn.) service ace but the hosts then rattled off ten straight points on their way to a 25-13 victory.
The Bulldogs were down by as many as eight points at 19-11 in the third set but they battled to get as close as 24-20 on some sloppy hitting by the Falcons and kills from Lauren Dinger (Norwell, Mass.) and Sami Mulcahy (Taunton, Mass.). In the end, Albertus proved to be too much as Ashley David ended the match with her fifth kill of the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Falcons hit a match-best .348 in the second set when they seized control of the match, while the setting duo of Nicole Beard and Marielis Muriel combined for 29 assists.
Gomez led all players with ten kills for the Falcons, while Kaitlyn Anderson (Clinton, Conn.) led the Bulldogs with nine of her own and Mulcahy finished with a team-best 13 digs.
UP NEXT:
The Bulldogs will return home on Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. showdown against Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
