Men's Soccer Falls to Anna Maria, 3-1

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Mass. - Sept. 26, 2021 - The Dean College men's soccer team was edged by Anna Maria, 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match Sunday afternoon at Lippert Field to wrap up the Homecoming Weekend's festivities.

Anna Maria improves to 1-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The AMCATS host Johnson & Wales on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Dean drops to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC. The Bulldogs travel to Norwich on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. GNAC contest against the Cadets.

The Bulldogs went on top 1-0, two minutes into the contest, when the Anna Maria goalie failed to clear the ball out of danger. Dean junior Angel Rivera (Atlanta, Ga.) stepped in to shoot the ball into the open net for his second goal of the season.

Anna Maria had an answer less than four minutes later when Nick Lawrence (North Attleboro, Mass.) made a nifty pass in the box to sophomore Zyaan Haldane (Hartford, Conn.). Haldane then beat the oncoming keeper into the corner of the net with his first tally of the season.

The AMCATS had a golden chance to take a lead in the 52nd minute when the Bulldogs were whistled for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Junior Hezekiah Adeyeye (Woonsocket, R.I.) stepped to the spot and fired the ball down the middle where Dean senior goalkeeper Bryce Antoch (Cranston, R.I.) made the save to preserve the 1-1 tie.

The visitors did find the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute when junior Brian Gonzalez (East Hampton, N.Y.) shot under the Dean goalie from a tough angle.

Adeyeye got redemption in the 82nd minute when he took a free kick from 30 yards out that sailed into the upper right corner of the goal to give Anna Maria the 3-1 advantage.

Antoch finished with six saves for the Bulldogs. Junior Kyle Sherman (Mount Laurel, N.J.) worked the first 68 minutes after allowing one goal with three saves before leaving with an injury. Freshman David Flores (San Antonio, Texas) made one save in the final 22 minutes to be credited with the victory.

Anna Maria had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, while Dean held a 16-14 advantage in shots.
