Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 24, 2021– The Dean College baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon. Johnson & Wales won the first game 13-1, while Dean took game two by a score of 6-5.
Prior to the start of today's action, seniors Vincent Buonaiuto (Danbury, Conn.), Landon Fish (New Port Richey, Fla.), Matt Callahan (Attleboro, Mass.), Jeff Sharnick (Stratford, Conn.), Colton Fitzsimmons (Fairhaven, Mass.), Brian Hadden (Newburyport, Mass.), Giovanni Filippone (Darien, Conn.), Corey Karnila (Raritan, N.J.), Bryce Reilly (Dover, N.H.), Ryan Stover (Middleboro, Mass.) and Gaten Davis (Anchorage, Alaska) were honored for their years of hard work and dedication to the baseball program and Dean College.
Dean goes to 4-4 overall and in the conference. Sunday's doubleheader with JWU has been canceled due to the forecasted rain. JWU goes to 8-10 overall and 6-2 in the GNAC.
GAME ONE – JWU 13, Dean 1
JWU had the bats working in the first game scoring 13 times on 18 hits. The Wildcats scored three in the first inning, which included a Kevin Duffy (Levittown, N.Y) solo homerun.
The visitors added one in the fourth before scoring five runs in the fifth thanks to a three-run home run from EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) and a two-run single from senior Colby Greenhalgh (Plainfield, Conn.).
JWU tacked on four more runs in the sixth. Senior Patrick Fleming (Lincoln, R.I.) had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double.
Dean got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Matt Callahan that scored Bryce Reilly.
Senior hurler Ryan Depatie (Pawtucket, R.I.) went the distance to earn his fourth win of the season for JWU. He gave up one run on seven hits and struck out seven.
Greenhalgh paced the JWU offense out of the leadoff spot with four hits in five at-bats.
Reilly led the Bulldogs with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.
Fitzsimmons threw a scoreless inning of relief for Dean.
GAME TWO – Dean 6, JWU 5
Greenhalgh got the scoring started in game two with a two-run double to right center in the top of the second.
Dean responded with four runs in the third. Hadden and Fish each had an RBI double in the inning, while sophomore Andrew Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.) knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.
After a scoreless fourth, the Wildcats took the lead in the fifth when Raimiel Rodriguez (Providence, R.I.) hit a three-run blast over the right field fence to give JWU a 5-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs benefited from a pair of JWU miscues for the tying run. The eventual winning run came off the bat of Hadden who double to right center to score Buonaiuto.
Junior Ethan Bernardo (Pawtucket, R.I.) pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the win for Dean. He finished with a pair of hitless innings and two strikeouts.
Hadden, junior Daniel Lilja (Lynn, Mass.) and junior Ryan Gallagher (Methuen, Mass.) each had two hits to lead the Dean lineup.
Greenhalgh went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for JWU.
Steve Rocchio (Cranston, R.I.) took the loss for JWU but only surrendered two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.
