FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 10, 2021– The Dean College baseball team returned to the diamond for the first time in more than a year and won both ends of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Albertus Magnus. The Bulldogs won game one 5-3 and game two 9-3.
Today's games marked the first for Dean as a member of the GNAC. The Bulldogs are 2-0 and have a quick turnaround to host Saint Joseph's (ME) on Sunday at noon. Albertus Magnus falls to 1-3 overall and in the conference.
The Dean Baseball team wore pink socks and ribbons to support Breast Cancer Awareness as part of Division III Week.
GAME ONE – Dean 5, Albertus Magnus 3
The visitors plated a run in the top of the second on a ground out by Joseph Matthews. The Falcons added another run in the third on a Justen Rodriguez RBI single.
Dean cut the deficit to one with an unearned run in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, Brandon Clark gave the Falcons a two-run cushion with a homerun.
Dean responded with a solo shot off the bat of senior Matt Callahan (Attleboro, Mass.) in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 3-2 in favor of the visitors. The Bulldogs weren't done, however, scoring two more runs in the frame to take a 4-3 lead. Senior Landon Fish (New Port Richey, Fla.) had an RBI triple and then scored on a double by sophomore Andrew Sullivan (Agawam, Mass.).
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the sixth with a bases loaded walk by Fish.
Senior Gaten Davis (Anchorage, Alaska) earned the win with five strong innings of work. He allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out five. Senior Brian Hadden (Newburyport, Mass.) picked up the save with two scoreless innings of relief.
Ricardo Torres took the loss for the Falcons. He went 4.1, struck out eight and gave up three earned runs.
Hadden and Fish had two hits apiece for Dean.
GAME TWO – Dean 9, Albertus Magnus 3
Albertus Magnus struck first again in game two with a run in the second off a Justen Rodriguez shot over the fence.
Dean answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run scoring double from junior Thomas Muizulis Jr. (Waltham, Mass.) who later came in on an error to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
The Falcons evened the score with an RBI double off the bat of Matt Warren in the third.
In the bottom of the third, Dean put four runs across to take a 6-2 lead. Sophomore Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) knocked in a pair with a double and junior Tommy Troy Jr. (Norwalk, Conn.) doubled to score Dovidio.
Dean added a run in the fourth off the bat of Brian Hadden who found the shrubbery over the fence for his first homerun of the season.
The Falcons got a run back in the fifth, but Dean added a run in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the 9-3 win and the sweep. Hadden and junior Daniel Lilja (Lynn, Mass.) each knocked in a run with a double.
Hadden finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, while Matt Callahan added three more hits to his day at the plate.
Warren and Rodriguez finished with two hits apiece for Albertus Magnus.
Junior Tyler McAloon (Berkeley, Mass.) picked up the win after five innings of work. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four. Senior Ryan Stover (Middleboro, Mass.) and junior Austin Crowley (Chicopee, Mass.) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
