Football Drops Week Three Matchup at Westfield State, 26-8

Westfield, Mass. – The Dean College Football team couldn't match the offensive pace set by Westfield State University in their week three match up and fell 26-8 to the Owls on Saturday. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-3 (0-2 MASCAC) while Westfield improved to 1-2 (1-1 MASCAC).

How it Happened:

  • After Dean won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, Westfield State received the ball and capitalized on an eleven-play, 70-yard drive, capped by a one-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Quinn Sumner for a 7-0 lead.

  • Dean turned the ball over on downs on their first drive. The Owls converted the opportunity into a 33-yard field goal to expand their lead to 10-0. From there, the Bulldogs pieced together a eleven-play drive, reaching the end zone with a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Chris Donohue (Brewster, N.Y.) to sophomore running back Yasir Moses (Daytona Beach, Fla.). Dean converted on the two-point attempt on a Donohue pass to sophomore tight end Brennan O'Brien (Danvers, Mass.), closing the gap to 10-8.

  • On the following drive, Sumner fumbled the ball on rushing attempt, which was recovered by first-year linebacker Aviren Chitpaseuth (Dracut, Mass.). Dean punted following a three-and-out drive, and Westfield State resumed the momentum, adding touchdowns on their next two drives prior to the half, giving the Owls a 23-8 advantage at halftime.

  • The Bulldogs were unable to put a drive in motion after receiving the ball out of the half, and the Owls added an additional 33-yard field goal in the third quarter.

  • Dean was able to force an additional fumble in the fourth quarter, set up by first-year defensive lineman Antonio Crank (East Providence, R.I.) and recovered by sophomore linebacker Chris Carter (Roanoke, VA), but could not reach the end zone as the Bulldogs and Owls endured a scoreless fourth quarter, setting in a 26-8 Westfield State victory.
