FRANKLIN, Mass. – In a thrilling Saturday matchup, the Dean College field hockey team dropped their first game of the season to Mount Holyoke College by a final score of 2-1. With the loss, Dean dropped to 3-1 overall, while the Lyons remained undefeated at 5-0.
How it Happened:
-Mount Holyoke struck first at the 9:42 mark. MJ Owens finished a feed from Diane Lee to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
-Dean goalkeeper
Sara Gardner (Hampstead, Md.) made a pair of first-quarter saves, while
Keira Houdegbe (West Lebanon, N.H.) added a key defensive save to keep the Bulldogs within one.
-Dean responded with a strong second quarter. Rookie
Hailey Lamping (Stanfordville, N.Y.) put a shot on target just five seconds into the period, establishing the pressure. The Bulldogs continued to attack the Lyons before
Emily Kilpatrick (Marion, Mass.) leveled the contest at 18:45. Lamping set up the play, earning the assist on Kilpatrick's second goal of the season.
-The Bulldogs continued to create opportunities after tying the game. Kilpatrick and
Katrina Lee (Brookline, N.H.) each recorded shots in the second quarter, while Gardner made another save to send the teams into halftime tied 1-1. Dean finished the first half with five shots in the second period after being held to two in the opening 15 minutes.
-Dean generated its best offensive pressure of the third quarter through its penalty-corner attack.
Kelsey Blair (Carmel, N.Y.) helped the Bulldogs earn four penalty corners in the period, and
Jaidyn Seitzer (Nottingham, N.H.) put a shot on target that was saved by Addie Oakes.
-Mount Holyoke threatened late in the third quarter. Linnea Alsted hit the post twice, but goalkeeper
Hailey Sykes (Pitman, N.J.) and the Dean defense kept the game level heading into the fourth. Sykes took over in goal to start the second half and finished with two saves.
-The Lyons eventually broke through at 58:01. Diane Lee scored her fifth goal of the season, putting Mount Holyoke ahead 2-1. Dean continued to battle but was unable to find an equalizer in the final two minutes.
