FRANKLIN, Mass. – In a game that was blanketed by nearly two inches of snow, the Dean College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Maine Maritime Academy, 17-12, on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Bulldogs move to 2-2 (0-1 GNAC), while the Mariners improve to 2-0.
How it Happened:
-Maine Maritime opened the contest with a flurry of scores. The Mariners went on a 4-0 run, courtesy of goals by Tobey Lappin and three other attackers.
-Three of the Mariners' goals were also in special teams situations. Dean penalties on Colin Murphy (Whitman, Mass.) and
Josh Hackett (Orange, Conn.) allowed the Mariners to convert on man-up goals. Matthew Villanueve also scored a man-down goal during the run.
-Dean found the box score with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Kevin Gardner (West Haven, Conn.) scored his first of three goals in the game, cutting into the Maritime lead.
-With another trio of scores, Maine Maritime finished the first quarter with a 7-1 advantage.
-Scoring in the second quarter was evenly matched, with the Mariners narrowly edging the Bulldogs 3-2. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week
Nick Fernandez (Weymouth, Mass.) entered the box score during this frame with a goal from
Manny Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.)
-Shortly after Fernandez's tally, Gardner scored his second goal of the game to make it 9-3.
-The Mariners scored the final goal of the half to extend their lead, 10-3, going into the locker room.
-The Bulldogs came out of the locker room with new life. The team scored six goals throughout the third quarter. This eventually became their highest-scoring quarter of the contest.
-Fernandez and
Joseph Marra (North Branford, Conn.) kicked off Dean's scoring in the third. Both goals were man-up tallies.
-In-between those goals, Maine Maritime also scored their second man-down goal of the game. Davison Nalor's three-minute penalty from the second quarter carried over, keeping the Mariners short-handed until 12:36 in the third.
-Alvarez-Segee responded to MMA's goal in dominant fashion. The junior recorded four scores, including three unassisted efforts. This helped put Dean back into striking distance, 15-9.
-The "Gettysburg Address" from Alvarez-Segee also prompted a 6-0 scoring run. To open the fourth quarter,
Connor McCarthy (Whitman, Mass.) found the back of the net. This was followed up by Gardner's hat trick score. With nine minutes remaining, dean brought the margin to four.
-However, Maine Maritime rallied back to score two more times. Bryce Cowell and Tobey Lappin each scored once again, giving the Mariners a 17-11 lead.
-Despite one more goal from Alvarez-Segee, the Bulldogs could not claw their way back. The Mariners finished victorious by a final score of 17-12.
