Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Tight-Knit GNAC Opener to Lasell, 18-13

FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Dean College men's lacrosse team fell in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener to Lasell University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 18-13. With their first loss of the season, the Bulldogs fall to 2-1 (0-1 GNAC), while the Lasers improve to 1-2 (1-0 GNAC).

How it Happened:
-The Bulldogs had the first chance of the game to score. Sophomore Nick Fernandez (Weymouth, Mass.) took a quick shot towards Lasell's Cameron Soave, but Soave made the save. This also allowed Lasell to setup their first opportunity of the game.
-Lasell took three shots on-goal, all of which were stopped by the Bulldog defense. However, on the fourth shot, Jason Martin scored the unassisted effort to give the Lasers the first goal.
-Just over two minutes later, Lasell added onto their lead with two more scores. Julien Vogel scored first, unassisted, followed by a Jack Condon goal. The assist from Martin helped Lasell achieve an early 3-0 lead.
-However, the Bulldogs gathered their footing and responded with four consecutive scores. Gavin McCarthy (Whitman, Mass.) scored Dean's first goal off an assist from Fernandez. That was quickly followed by a goal from Nathan Hartshorn (Weymouth, Mass.), assisted by Manny Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.).
-Dean tied the game at three thanks to a score from AJ Woodward (New Milford, Conn.). Just over a minute later, the Bulldogs took the lead on an unassisted score from Joseph Marra (North Branford, Conn.). It was now 4-3 in favor of the hometown Bulldogs.
-Each side scored one more time in the quarter to finish the first 15 minutes at 5-5.
-Ten more goals would be scored in the second quarter, with each side scoring five apiece. The quarter was highlighted by Fernandez, who potted the quintuplet of Dean tallies. His efforts helped the Bulldogs keep the game tied at halftime, 10-10.
-However, the Lasers began their attack in the third quarter. They outscored the Bulldogs 5-2 in the tertiary frame, including a pair of scores from Colin LaBaron. Dean responded with a pair of goals from G. McCarthy, but Lasell led 15-12 going into the final frame.
-Penalties also became an issue in the third, with both sides committing a combined nine penalties in 15 minutes. Dean had four of the nine infractions.
-Dean valiantly pushed for a comeback, led by goalkeeper David MacNeil (Whitman, Mass.). The sophomore made 11 saves in an impressive display in the crease.
However, Lasell outscored the Bulldogs in the final quarter, 3-1, to take the win by a final score of 18-13.
