FRANKLIN, Mass. – In a game that went down to the wire, the Dean College women's lacrosse team fell in overtime to the University of Maine – Farmington on Thursday by a final score of 14-13. With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 0-3 (0-1 GNAC), while the Beavers grabbed their first win of the season (1-2)
How it Happened:
-Maine–Farmington struck first early in the opening quarter, scoring two quick goals to establish early momentum. However, Dean responded with a goal of their own by
Ailey Pequita (Enfield, Conn.) to cut the deficit to 2–1. This was also Pequita's first collegiate goal.
-The Beavers added another goal late in the first quarter to take a 3–1 lead heading into the second period.
-Dean began to find its rhythm offensively in the second quarter, capitalizing on a pair of draw control wins to create scoring opportunities and cut into the deficit.
-The Bulldogs put together a strong run midway through the second frame, scoring three straight goals to swing the momentum and briefly take the lead.
Alisha Caldeira (West Bridgewater, Mass.) found the back of the net, followed by goals from Pequita and
Ali Murphy (Middleboro, Mass.).
-Maine–Farmington answered late in the half with a pair of goals, sending the teams into halftime tied at 5–5 after an evenly played first half.
-The Beavers opened the third quarter with a quick quartet of goals to regain the lead. Dean broke the scoring chain moments later with an unassisted score from
Bella McQuade (Attleboro, Mass.). This cut the Dean deficit to 9-6.
-Both teams traded goals throughout the third period, with Maine–Farmington narrowly outscoring the Bulldogs 4–3 in the quarter to carry a 9–8 lead into the final frame.
-Dean mounted a strong push in the fourth quarter, scoring multiple goals early in the period to briefly reclaim the lead. Murphy netted the go-ahead goal, making it 12-11.
-Maine–Farmington responded with timely offense of its own, and the teams continued to exchange goals in the closing minutes as the intensity ramped up.
-With time winding down in regulation, the Beavers netted the game-tying goal with 31 seconds remaining to even the score at 13–13, forcing the contest into overtime.
-In the extra session, Maine–Farmington capitalized on its possession and found the back of the net 4:35 into overtime, securing the 14–13 victory.
