Notables:
-This is the first time since 2021 that the baseball team has opened a season 2-0. Dean took down Albertus Magnus College in a GNAC double-header in April of 2021.
How it Happened:
-Both sides opened the first inning with quick retirements. Dean starter
Owen Critchley (Dayton, Maine) drew three quick outs, including his first strikeout of the game.
Jacob Paschetto (East Longmeadow, Mass.) grabbed Dean's first hit with a single, but it was quickly negated.
-Otterbein struck first at the top of the second inning. Cam Fisher dropped down an RBI single, allowing JT Gels to score. With another scoreless frame by Dean's offense, the Cardinals possessed the early 1-0 lead.
-Otterbein continued its early barrage in the third inning. Evan Chmielewski snagged two more RBIs on a single, making it 3-0 Cardinals. Dean went three-and-out in the bottom half, including a pair of outs in the field.
-The Cardinals scored another in the top half of the fourth on an RBI single from Jack Barber. At this point, Otterbein had already recorded seven hits in the contest. With another scoreless frame by the Bulldogs, Otterbein held a crucial 4-0 lead.
-However, the tide drastically turned in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs scored five unanswered runs on Otterbein to get a 5-4 advantage. This included RBIs from
Kyler Lorenz (East Providence, R.I.),
Case LaChance (Latham, N.Y.), and
Nick Amendolara (Bayville, N.Y.).
-Otterbein rallied back in the next inning to take a 6-5 lead. Jack Barber launched a two-run homer, bringing home Caleb Bond.
-After holding Otterbein in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs banded together again to tie the game.
Luke Fahey (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored on an error by the shortstop, bringing the score to 6-6.
-Dean reliever
Spencer Lichstrahl (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) continued to mow down the Cardinals' attack, keeping them scoreless once again through the eighth. This allowed Lorenz to set up the go-ahead run in the bottom half. His RBI single brought home
Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.), giving Dean a one-run lead going into the final inning.
-However, the Cardinals were able to tie the game in the ninth. Fisher roped an RBI double, scoring one run to make it 7-7. Dean was rendered scoreless in the bottom half, sending the game to extra innings.
-
Kiefer Culligan (South Windsor, Conn.) Came into relief in the top of the tenth after Otterbein got two runners aboard via walk. Culligan drew a groundout to second base, closing the inning for Dean.
-Giambra kicked off the bottom half with a quick single. He then advanced to third on another base hit by
Colin Favata (Syosset, N.Y.). With a runner in scoring position, Lorenz laid down a sacrifice bunt. His perfect placement allowed him to snack past the defender, grabbing the hit and allowing Giambra to score the walk-off run. Dean walked away victorious by a final score of 8-7.
