FRANKLIN, Mass. – In a thrilling upset, the Dean College women's basketball defeated New England College, 83-75, on Saturday afternoon inside Pieri Gymnasium. With the upset victory, the Bulldogs advanced to 6-13 (1-5 GNAC), while the Pilgrims dropped to 12-7 (3-4 GNAC).
Notables:
-Dean's offense shined throughout the entirety of the game. They outscored NEC in three out of the four quarters while shooting 40 percent from the field.
-Three players scored 20 points or more for the Bulldogs:
Abigail Lacy (Arroyo Grande, Calif.),
Azaria Landry (Lacey, Wash.), and
Jordan Ellis (Bridgeport, Conn.).
-Ellis registered her fourth double-double of the season by adding 13 rebounds to her standout shooting performance.
How it Happened:
-The Bulldogs soared into the box score in the first quarter. They scored on each of their first three shot attempts from the trio of Lacy, Landry, and Ellis. Landry also knocked down back-to-back three-point shots.
-Despite Dean's strong start, the Pilgrims managed to keep pace. Camryn Lewis converted on a layup down low, giving them a 14-13 advantage just five minutes in.
-All five Dean starters got involved in the first quarter, allowing them to retake the lead 25-20 at the end of the frame.
-The second quarter was controlled by Lacy. She scored 11 points along with an assist and pair of rebounds. She aided the Bulldogs to once again control the lead going into halftime, 44-31.
-However, the Pilgrims came out of the locker room and vigilantly responded. They opened the third quarter by scoring 13 of the first 20 points. This included scores from Ajayah Lively, Nyah Belton, and Macy Gordon.
-NEC continued to pounce, eventually tying the game with under thirty seconds to play in the quarter. However, a buzzer-beater shot by Lacy gave Dean the lead once again. The Bulldogs led NEC 59-56 going into the final frame.
-With the game on the line, the Bulldogs rose to the occasion. They shot just over 40 percent from beyond the arc while converting 60 percent of their free throw attempts.
-Landry and Ellis led the way to victory in the final quarter, scoring nine and six points, respectively.
-NEC ultimately got into foul trouble at the end of the game. Camryn Lewis fouled out of the game, followed by two other players with four each. This allowed Dean to seal the win with free throws.
-At the final buzzer, the Bulldogs emerged victorious with a final score of 83-75.
