Women’s Basketball Stymied by Raiders in Conference Opener, 81-56

FRANKLIN, Ma. – The Dean College women's basketball team was defeated in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opening game by Rivier University, 81-56. With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 5-9 (0-1) on the year, while the Raiders grab their first win of the season (1-13, 1-0).

How it Happened:
-The Raiders narrowly edged Dean in the opening quarter by a score of 17-15. Junior Jordan Ellis (Bridgeport, Conn) helped the Bulldogs keep it close with six points. Her scoring efforts led the team in the first quarter.
-The first quarter lead was exchanged several times throughout the opening ten minutes. However, it was a good layup from Rivier's Sydney Perry that ultimately gave them the slight edge
-Rivier continued their run in the driver's seat in the second quarter. Their 18 points in this frame would give them a halftime lead of 35-29.
-Junior guard Azaria Landry (Lacey, Wash.) led Dean in second quarter scoring. She posted six points with a steal.
-Both teams saw a combined 20 fouls in the first half. 12 of those belonged to Rivier.
-The Raiders began to run away in the third quarter. Gianna Donato and Juju Nealy each led the way with double digit points. Rivier posted 24 points in the third quarter, their highest scoring quarter of the game.
-The Bulldogs made it a fight in the second half with 27 combined points. Ellis and Kendrah Doane (New Salem, Mass.) led the way in the box score. Ellis scored six more points in the final quarter, while Doane knocked down 33 percent of her three-point attempts.
-However, the Bulldogs' downfall was with fouls. Both Landry and Abigail Lacy (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter. This forced Dean to play short-handed for the remainder of the contest.
-In the end, Rivier took the conference opener by a final score of 81-56.

Standouts:
-Ellis (16 Points, 6 Rebounds, 2 Steals)
-Landry (15 Points, Assist, 4 Rebounds, Steal)
-Doane (10 Points, 9 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 2 Steals)
