Baseball Defeated in Conference Matchup with Mariners, 18-2

New London, CT- The Dean College baseball team was taken down by Mitchell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. The 18-2 final score puts Dean at 6-17 (3-5) on the year, while Mitchell moves to 15-13 (7-1).

Due to location changes, Mitchell served as the visitor's (batting first) while Dean played as the home team.

In the top of the first, the Mariners jumped out to the early lead, scoring off a sacrifice flyout from Ken Miller Jr. Starting pitcher Nick Swain (South Portland, ME) held his ground, recording two quick outs shortly after to get out of the jam. However, the Bulldogs rapidly responded in the bottom half. Rylan Secovich (Southwick, MA) roped a triple into the right-center gap. Then, Tyler Giambra (Prospect, CT) drove him home with a groundout. The Bulldogs were retired shortly after, but tied the game at one.

Mitchell rallied once again in the second, scoring five more runs off of Swain. After a tough two thirds of an inning, Coach Endy Morales went to the bullpen. Kiefer Culligan (South Windsor, CT) took over in relief, shutting down the Mariners to advance to the bottom half. The Bulldogs could not convert to end the inning, going down in-order.

Throughout the next few innings, Culligan would continue to work, allowing only two earned runs through an inning and two thirds of work. Owen Critchley (Barre, MA) would relieve Culligan in the fourth, shutting the door thanks to a double-play putout by Secovich. After four complete innings, the Bulldogs trailed the Mariners 8-1.

The Mariners would score another run in the fifth inning, followed by another scoreless frame in the bottom half. The Bulldogs, despite being down, would continue to fight. Jadon Murakami (Aiea, HI) would reach base via hit and make a strong play in the sixth inning at second base. Dean would also score their second run of the game this inning. Nick Amendolara (Bayville, NY) recorded an RBI single, scoring Secovich and cutting the Mariner lead.

However, after a nine-run seventh inning for Mitchell, which included a grand slam by Braiden Alaimo, the Mariners would go on to win the game by a final score of 18-2 (seven innings).

Swain took the loss for Dean on the mound, while Mitchell's Joshua Scamman secured the win. Offensively, Secovich and Murakami led the way for the Bulldogs, recording two hits each. Amendolara and Joey Bossinas (Ossining, NY) also recorded one hit apiece.

Dean is back in action on Tuesday at 3:00PM, traveling to Bates College for a non-conference contest.
