New London, NH- Despite a strong performance in the first half of the ballgame, the Dean College baseball team was defeated on a walk-off effort by Colby-Sawyer College Monday afternoon. The 9-8 final score puts Dean at 6-22 (3-8) on the year, while the Chargers move to 10-17 (5-4).
After four scoreless innings by starter Domenic Brazeau (Warwick, RI), Dean's offense came alive in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to take the first lead. Nick Amendolara (Bayville, NY) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second, allowing Rylan Secovich (Southwick, MA) to score on an error by the pitcher. Luke Fahey (Glastonbury, CT) then singled to center field, driving in Amendolara, and Tyler Giambra (Prospect, CT) followed with a single to right field, bringing in Fahey and further extending the lead. After a Colby-Sawyer home run by Evan Dennis, the Bulldogs added another run in the sixth inning, with Giambra's single scoring Fahey, making it 6–1.
Brazeau continued to dazzle through the middle hash of the game, keeping the Chargers at bay with just one run. He would finish the afternoon with eight strikeouts and zero walks. However, he soon ran into trouble in the eighth inning. Colby-Sawyer responded in the frame, scoring six runs to take tie the game at 8-8. Although JR Salvadore (Barre, MA) would come in for relief, the runs would be earned to Brazeau.
Despite another effort by Dean in the ninth, they were unable to score. Colby-Sawyer took the momentum and seized the chance with a walk-off single by Dennis.
Tyler Giambra took the loss for Dean, while Colby-Sawyer's Jack Mullen earned the win. Offensively, Jadon Murakami (Aiea, HI) shined for Dean, going 3-4 with an RBI. Giambra and Owen Critchley (Dayton, ME) would also return two hits and an RBI each. Three additional Bulldogs earned one hit each.
Baseball returns to action tomorrow at 3:00PM, traveling to New England College (played @ Pappas Field) for another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.
