Providence, RI- The Dean College baseball team fell in both their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games with Johnson & Wales University (RI) Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped game one by a score of 6-1, and game two by a score of 3-2. With the pair of losses, Dean falls to 6-21 (3-7) on the year, while the Wildcats move to 19-10 (9-1).
Game One: Johnson & Wales 6, Dean College 1
Opening the series, the Wildcats took an early lead in the first inning, scoring two runs on a single by Owen Davis and a throwing error by Dean. They added three more in the second inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a single by Jimenez. Dean's offense struggled to generate momentum, managing only one run in the eighth inning.
Philip Curran (West Springfield, MA) took the loss for the Bulldogs, while Aidan Vining earned the win for the Wildcats.?
While Johnson & Wales was able to generate six runs, it only took four scoring plays to do so. Multiple runs were created on each play due to throwing errors. However, the Bulldogs were still able to generate some offense. Their only run came in the eighth inning when Kyler Lorenz (East Providence, RI) laid down a sacrifice bunt, allowing Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, NY) to score. Four different Bulldogs earned one hit each in the contest, including an RBI for Lorenz.
Game Two: Johnson & Wales 3, Dean College 2
After one and a half scoreless innings in game two, the Bulldogs would find their turn to open with a lead. Colin Favata (Syosset, NY) would run into a groundout play, allowing Nathan Suncar (Boston, MA) to score the opening run. However, the Wildcats would soon respond, adding the tying run in the fourth inning. The game would remain scoreless for another seven and a half innings, with Dean grabbing another in the top of the eighth. Tyler Giambra (Prospect, CT) laced an RBI single, allowing Rylan Secovich (Southwick, MA) to score.Â
However, the Wildcats would once again take advantage of throwing errors. With two men on base, Gimabra made a costly throw to first, allowing the runner to reach and two runs to come across the plate. After a scoreless top of the ninth, Dean would go on to lose the second game by a final score of 3-2. Kiefer Culligan (South Windsor, CT) would be charged with the loss, despite both runs being unearned. Nick Swain (South Portland, ME) pitched a solid five innings, allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts. Secovich would lead Dean's offensive efforts again with a multi-hit performance.Â
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday afternoon, traveling to Colby-Sawyer College for a 3:00PM GNAC contest.
