Lewiston, ME- The Dean College baseball team fell victim to a comeback loss from Bates College yesterday afternoon, losing 5-3. Dean now moves to 6-19 (3-5 GNAC) on the season, while the Bobcats move to 6-13 (2-4 NESCAC).
The game opened with an old-fashioned standoff, remaining scoreless through the first four innings of action. Both teams' pitchers worked effectively, keeping the respective offenses at bay. Spencer Lichstrahl (Fort Lauderdale, FL) had one of his best starts of the season. The junior pitched five innings, allowing zero earned runs on zero hits, two walks, and one strikeout.Â
The Bulldogs broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Nathan Suncar (Boston, MA) doubled to right field, driving in Rylan Secovich (Southwick, MA) from second base. Suncar advanced to third on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Tyler Giambra (Prospect, CT), giving Dean a 2-0 lead.
Bates responded in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joe Yoxall led off with a single, and after advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored after consecutive base hits. Reliever Danny Goyette (Holliston, MA) would be tagged with the loss, allowing the go-ahead run to cross the plate. After six innings of action, Bates would now lead the game 4-2.
The Bobcats added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Gibby Benson would drop an RBI single, allowing the run to score and make it a 5-2 Bates lead. The Bulldogs would score ne more run in the ninth inning. Luke Fahey (Glastonbury, CT) would rope an RBI double, bringing home Suncar. However, the efforts would be haulted there. The Bobcats went on to win the ballgame by a final score of 5-3.
Suncar and Secovich led Dean's efforts on offense, producing two hits each. Suncar also recorded an RBI. Additionally, six different players would record one hit each for Dean. The Bulldogs would feature four different pitchers, including the previosuly mentioned Lichstrahl and Goyette. Joshua Cavas (McKinney, TX) and Styles Hucul (Richmond, MI) would also appear in relief.Â
Dean continues their road trip today at 1:00PM and 3:30PM, heading to Johnson & Wales University (Providence) for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double-header.Â
