New York, NY- The Dean College baseball team opened their season on a challenging note, dropping all four games of their weekend series with New York University. Dean now heads to Fort Myers 0-4 (0-0), while NYU moves to 6-4 (0-0).
Day One: NYU 12-6 / NYU 7-3
In the first game against the Violets, Dean showed offensive promise, especially in the third inning.
Nathan Suncar (Boston, MA) delivered a two-RBI homer and added another run in the sixth inning via a single by
Joey Bossinas (Ossining, NY). However, their defense faltered, with key errors contributing to NYU's six-run third inning, which ultimately decided the game. Despite 10 hits and a couple of late rallies, including a run scored by
Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, NY), Dean couldn't overcome the damage done in the earlier innings.
Game two saw Dean fight hard, but ultimately end with the same result. The Bulldogs took an early lead in the first inning when Goss scored on a passed ball. Dean added another run in the sixth with a single from Kyle Lorenz (East Providence, RI), driving in Tom Giambra (Prospect, CT). The Bulldogs tried to stay in the game, with a late RBI from
Colin Favata (Syosset, NY) in the seventh to score Suncar. However, a big sixth inning from NYU, featuring a three-run homer by Kyle Mocklis, put the game out of reach. Despite nine hits, Dean struggled to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, ultimately losing to NYU.
Day Two: NYU 10-6 / NYU 17-2
After a night's rest, the Bulldogs came out swinging in the Sunday opener, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Favata reached on an error to score the first run, followed by a double from Bossinas that brought in another. A passed ball and a sacrifice fly from Giambra gave the Bulldogs their early cushion. However, NYU responded quickly in the second inning, scoring three runs and adding five more over the next few innings. Dean managed one more run in the sixth from a single by
Owen Taber (Attleboro, MA), but NYU's late offensive explosion, including a five-run eighth inning, sealed a 10-6 victory for the home team. Despite a solid offensive start, Dean couldn't hold onto their lead, and NYU capitalized on mistakes to take control.
After three straight games with the Violets, Dean lost their steam in game four, ultimately losing 17-2. The Bulldogs managed to score in the third and fourth innings, with Lorenz crossing the plate on a passed ball and Favata driving in a run. However, the game quickly got out of hand as NYU exploded for a six-run third inning, which included several key hits like a double by Chris Dunn that brought in two runs. Despite solid defense and a couple of scoring opportunities, Dean was taken down to end the series.Â
