Franklin, MA- The Dean College men's lacrosse team dropped their first game of the season in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship rematch with the University of Saint Joseph. The 16-13 loss puts Dean at 7-1 (1-1) on the season while the Blue Jays move to 3-5 (1-1).
The game started with a strong offensive showing from USJ, who scored four quick goals to build a commanding lead. Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, CT) put Dean on the board in the first quarter with a solo effort at 3:43. Soon after, he added another assist on a Manny Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, MA) goal to bring Dean within 5-2 at the close of the first period. The Blue Jays continued to press, leading 6-2 at the end of the first quarter after a late goal by Christian Decker.
In the second period, Dean began to show more resilience. Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, MA) scored an unassisted goal at 13:48 to make it 6-3, and Joseph Marra (North Branford, CT) followed with a goal off an assist from Speirs, narrowing the gap to 6-4. However, USJ regained control with a 2-0 run, increasing their lead to 8-4 before the halftime break. The Bulldogs weren't deterred, and in the third period, they mounted a stronger attack, led by three goals from Speirs, Jason Richard (Holden, MA), and Aiden Anthony (Stoneham, MA). Despite their efforts, the Blue Jays responded with four goals of their own, including two from Evan Baden, extending their lead to 12-9 heading into the final quarter.
The Bulldogs showed continued determination in the fourth, with a late goal from Aidan McCarthy (Whitman, MA) that brought the score to 14-12. However, the University of Saint Joseph's attack was too much to overcome, and with late goals from Baden and Carr, they sealed the victory at 16-13.
Dean's offense was led by while D. Alvarez-Segee with five total points, while Speirs and M. Alvarez-Segee added 3 points of their own. Elijah Beland (Augusta, ME) added 12 saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
