Franklin, MA- Multiple errors cost the Dean College baseball team in their Sunday showdown with Saint Joseph's College of Maine. The Bulldogs lost by a final score of 10-7, moving to 3-11 (1-1) on the season. Meanwhile, the Monks move to 8-5 (1-1).
Saint Joseph's jumped to an early lead with a run in the first inning, courtesy of an RBI single. The Bulldogs were held scoreless through the first two innings, but responded in the third. Rylan Secovich (Southwick, MA) got the hitting going in the first inning, smashing a triple. That run would not be scored. Shortly after, Nick Amendolara (Bayville, NY) doubled to drive in Secovich and Kyler Lorenz (East Providence, RI), cutting the deficit to 5-2.
In the fifth, Dean continued to fight back. Secovich brought in another run with a single that scored Jadon Murakami (Aiea, HI), closing the gap to 6-3. Dean eventually tied the game in the sixth inning after Lorenz reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Colin Favata (Syosset, NY). With the game tied a 6-6, the Bulldogs looked to their trusted arm in Owen Critchley (Dayton, ME).
Despite having an impeccable fifth and sixth inning, Dean would lose the game in the eighth inning. With two outs and nobody on-base, a costly error would start a rally for the Monks. Saint Joseph's would go on to score four more runs in the inning, pushing them to a 10-6 lead. The Bulldogs would also finish the day with seven total errors. Kiefer Culligan (South Windsor, CT) would come in and relieve Critchley, who took the loss on the mound (1-3).
Dean wasn't done yet, though, and mounted a late rally in the ninth inning. Murakami reached base, and Amendolara's single added another run. However, it wasn't enough to bridge the gap. Saint Joseph's held firm, sealing the game with a 10-7 final score.
Key performances for the Bulldogs included Amendolara, who went 2-4 with two RBIs, and Secovich, who finished 3-4 with an RBI. Three total players for Dean (Lorenz, Amendolara, Murakami) finished with two hits each.
Dean will return home on Tuesday, March 25th, for a 3:30PM contest with Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
