Franklin, MA- The Dean College Women's Volleyball Team broke out the brooms on Thursday evening, defeating Massachusetts Maritime Academy by a final score of 3-0. With the Win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-18 overall (1-11 GNAC), while the Buccaneers drop to 5-20 (1-6 MASCAC).
Noteworthy Marks:
-Prior to the match, the Dean College Department of Athletics & Recreation honored the four seniors on the Women's Volleyball roster:
Caitlin Cooper (Amherst, NH),
Katie Jones (Franklin, MA),
Carly Rettberg (Haddam, CT), and
Skylar Raskevitz (Easthampton, MA).Â
-Along with her commemorative jersey, Raskevitz was presented three special volleyballs. These commemorative balls resembled her three program records. These include total sets played, service aces, and total DIGs.Â
How it Happened:
-The Buccaneers would win the match's first two points, but the Bulldogs make quick work of a comeback. Rettberg would go to the line for ten straight points, including several kills and aces from Dean. Both
Maddy Seymour (Simsbury, CT) and
Olivia Mackinnon (Plymouth, MA) contributed in the opening effort.Â
-Dean would go on another large run towards the end of the first set, scoring nine of the final ten points. The Bulldogs took the first set by a final score of 25-10.
-The second set would prove to be much closer than the first. Dean would jump out to a 5-1 lead, including an opening service ace from Jones. However, the Buccaneers would storm right back to bring it within one.Â
-Both Jones and Raskevitz would continue to succeed at the service line. Jones also secured several kills throughout the set, becoming one of Dean's top contributors.Â
-Down 24-22 in the final moments, Dean would dig deep and tie the set. Seymour would get the first kill, followed by three straight kills from Jones. Dean now led 2-0 going into set three.
-Like set two, set three would also be decided at the last second. Everyone contributed offensively for the Bulldogs, including Cooper, Jones, and
Chloe Demaio (Needham, MA). Tied at 23, the Bulldogs would grab the final two points to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
