Franklin, MA- After one of the best games of the season, the Dean College Field Hockey team took down New England College in double overtime by a final score of 2-1. With the crucial GNAC win, Dean now improves to 12-6 (8-1 GNAC), while the Pilgrims drop to 10-5 (7-2 GNAC).
Noteworthy Marks:
-The Bulldogs now have the tie-breaker over New England College, who was tied with Dean (7-1) heading into this contest. Dean also maintains first place in the conference, holding the tie-breaker over Saint Joseph's College of Maine (8-1).
-Dean grabs their first-ever win versus New England College. They now bring the all-time series to 1-5.
-Since September 27th, Dean has only allowed a combined four goals. This is through six games, all of which are wins.
-Prior to the game, the Dean College Department of Athletics & Recreation recognized the seniors on the Field Hockey team:
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, MA),
Emma Mock (Tunkhannock, PA), and
Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, RI).
How it Happened:
-Dean would try to strike first blood in the opening quarter. Ramos would attempt two shots up-front, but they were stopped by keeper Makenzie Anderson. Only one other shot would take place in the first, by
Emily Yazzetti (Mahopac, NY).
-The remainder of the first would be a taste of what the game would bring. Both sides played physical, keeping tensions high into the second.
-Both sides would rotate substitutions at the beginning of the second, keeping fresh legs on the field. Immediately after, Dean would get two more shots on-goal. The first would be by
Emily Kilpatrick (Marion, MA) and the other by
Emma Gragen (Brattleboro, VT).
-However, the Pilgrims would slowly gain control at the second of the second. In the final four minutes, they would secure two penalty corners and three shots. The Bulldogs, through, would stand tall to keep them scoreless. They game remained 0-0 at the half.
-
Sara Gardner (Hampstead, MD) would take the reigns in-goal at the start of the second half for Dean. After a flurry of NEC substitutions, Dean went back on the attack. Gragen would get a short, followed by a penalty corner. Then, after a beautiful feed from
Jordan Boelig (Tilton, NH), Gragen burried the game's first goal. Dean now led 1-0.
-In the fourth, Dean would try to get insurance with five shots and a penalty corner. However, the Pilgrims rallied back the other way. They would eventually setup a penalty corner of their own and score. Kacey McClay scored the goal, bringing the game to 1-1. NEC would get one more shot in the final thirty seconds of the quarter, but after an absolute grudge match, the game went into overtime.
-The first overtime period saw a total of eight shots, six of which from the Bulldogs. However, the score was still unsettled. Play continued into a second overtime.
-Just over 60 seconds into the second overtime, Ramos rushed down the right side of the field. In a two-on-one, she drew the keeper out of the cage, eventually feeding a perfect pass to
Katrina Lee (Brookline, NH). Lee would bury the goal, sealing the double overtime win for the Bulldogs.
