Newton, MA- The Dean College Field Hockey team defeated Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday afternoon. With the 4-1 victory, Dean now improves to a program-best 11-6 (7-1 GNAC), while the Lasers drop to 5-8 (4-4 GNAC).
Noteworthy Marks:
-Dean's victory officially secured a home playoff game. This is the first time since joining the NCAA that Dean has hosted a playoff game for a women's athletic program.
-Sophomore
Emma Gragen (Brattleboro, VT) scored two goals in just her second game since returning to the lineup. She had four points on the afternoon.
-The Bulldogs can now secure the number one seed in the GNAC Tournament with a win on Saturday versus New England College.
How it Happened:
-The first quarter would be a stalemate on both sides. Lasell would draw the first shots of the game, with all three being saved by keeper
Sara Gardner (Hampstead, MD). Dean would then get a penalty corner of their own, unfortunately coming short of the cage. After one last shot by sophomore
Emily Yazzetti (Mahopac, NY), the game would be tied at the end of the quarter.
-After Lasell got the upper hand in the first quarter, the Bulldogs would strike back in the second.
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, MA) and
Katrina Lee (Brookline, NH) would blast a threesome of shots, followed by another chance that snuffed the post. However, after the barrage of shots, Yazzetti finally broke through in the 24th minute. Her unassisted goal gave Dean the 1-0 lead.
-Four minutes later, Yazzetti struck again. She would score her second unassisted goal of the afternoon to give Dean the 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs also led 2-0 going into halftime.
-Dean would be the only goal-scorer in the third off eight different shots. This time, Gragen would get on the board off an assist from
Jadyn Crowell (Bordentown, NJ). This would be Gragen's first goal since Manhattanville on September 5th.
-Lasell would break the shutout bid early in the fourth quarter. Amelia McAfee would score the goal, assisted by Ellis, to put the Lasers back within two.
-Dean would return the favor shortly after. Gragen scored her second of the game, assisted by
Emily Kilpatrick (Marion, MA), to bring their advantage to 4-1.
-The Bulldogs would seal their victory by keeping the ball in the offensive zone. After three more shots, Dean would win by the score of 4-1.
