West Hartford, Conn.- The Dean College Bulldogs fell 4-1 to the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) Blue Jays in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday. The loss drops Dean to 1-4-1 (0-3-1 GNAC) on the year, while the Blue Jays improve to 2-5-0 (2-2-0 GNAC).
USJ got on the scoreboard first, in the 22nd minute, when
Julia Loughman scored her third goal of the season, assisted by
Alana Picard. Dean battled back, responding with a goal of their own to even the score at one off the foot of senior
Jazlyn Estrella (Johnston, R.I.), assisted by first-year
Zia Lear (Griswold, Conn.). The goal was Estrella's first of the season and second of her career, while Lear's, starting her third career game, registered her first collegiate point. The rest of the first half was scoreless and the two teams entered the halfime break knotted at a goal a piece. The hosts outshot Dean 15-1 in the first half despite the Bulldogs' 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
USJ took control in the second half, scoring three goals in the span of seven minutes to break open a tight contest. The Blue Jays' goals were scored by
Zoe Zappone, Brooke Landry and Picard. Picard also assisted on Landry's strike. Saint Joseph's held a 9-2 advantage in shots in the second half, and a 24-3 total edge in shots taken. Dean split the goalkeeping duties with senior
Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) making the start and playing 61 minutes, allowing four goals with six saves. Junior
Lexi Gerow (Pownal, Vt.) played the final 29 minutes and made one save.
Dean is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Emmanuel for a 3:00 p.m. GNAC contest in Boston, Mass.
