Franklin, Mass.- Senior Goalie
Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) made two game-saving stops in the closing minute to preserve the shutout and ensure a draw for the Dean College Bulldogs in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against New England College on Saturday afternoon. The tie pushes the Bulldogs to 1-3-1 (0-2-1 GNAC) on the year, while NEC moves to 0-5-1 (0-2-1).
In the final minute, a Bulldog giveaway gave the visitors a strong chance from outside the box, but a diving Gaunt deflected a strike from NEC forward
Abbey Keyes, pushing it wide to keep the game scoreless. Moments later, NEC threatened again, this time down the left side as the clock ticked under ten seconds remaining.
Julianna Barrett's shot, angled for the lower corner, was again pushed aside from Gaunt, and dribbled away as time expired.
A tightly contested game throughout, NEC outshot the Bulldogs 14-13 and held a 7-5 lead in corner kicks. Gaunt finished with nine saves, while Pilgrim keeper
Hollie Bomba registered seven. First-year
Zia Lear (Griswold, Conn.) led the Bulldogs with three shots, two on goal, while first-year
Madison Arthur (Winsted, Conn.) and senior
Lisette Ayala (Chicopee, Mass.) both added two shots (both on goal).
Next up, the Bulldogs will travel to University of Saint Joseph's (Conn.) on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. start.
