Providence, R.I.- Four second half goals from Rhode Island College broke open a close game and sent the Dean College women's soccer team to their first loss of the season 5-0 on Sunday. Dean falls to 1-1 on the year, while RIC improves to 2-0.
Â
Despite being outshot 12-0 in the opening half, the Bulldogs remained within striking distance due to great goaltending from senior Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.), who made five saves in the first frame. Rhode Island College held a 5-0 advantage but led only 1-0 at the halftime break after a goal by Marissa Ruzzano in the third minute.
Â
In the second half, the hosts found their groove, scoring three times over a span of 12 minutes to take a commanding 4-0 lead, and adding an insurance goal late to round out the 5-0 score. Rhode Island College goals were scored by Ruzzano (3), Karol Matamoros, and Tori Coroa.Â
Â
Gaunt finished with eight saves in 90 minutes of work. Jazlyn Estrella (Johnston, R.I.) and Zia Lear (Griswold, Ct.) led the Bulldog attack with a shot on goal each.Â
Â
Next up for Dean is the Bulldog's first home game, on Friday at 4:00 against Lasell on Grant Field.Â
