STANDISH, Maine – April 9, 2024 – The Dean College men's lacrosse team fell on the road to Saint Joseph's (Maine), 14-9, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game under the lights on Tuesday.
Dean (7-4, 3-3 GNAC, 1-1 South) travels to Lasell on Saturday at noon for a pivotal South Division contest with the Lasers. Saint Joseph's (6-7, 3-3 GNAC, 1-1 North) hosts Regis on Friday at 4 p.m.
Senior
Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) scored four times, while senior
Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) added a pair of goals. Sophomore
Shawn Beebe (Groton, Conn.), junior
Owen Brine (Lebanon, N.H.) and junior
Jaden Wise (Belchertown, Mass.) also found the scoring column.
Xavier Michaud led all player with six points on five goals and an assist for the Monks. Tyler Moscato, Will Levesque, Matt Denman and Nathaniel Girardin each scored twice. Girardin added a game best three assists.
Dean first-year
Elijah Beland (Augusta, Maine) took the loss with a season-high 18 saves, while Reed Wescott made 12 saves in the win for the Monks.
The teams traded the first two goals of the game before Dean went on a 3-0 spurt to take a 4-1 lead, less than six minutes into the contest. Michaud scored twice for the Monks to pull within one, but a goal by Speirs at 3:22 put the Bulldogs on top 5-3 heading into the second.
After Speirs began the second quarter with his second straight goal for Dean and a 6-3 lead, the Monks turned things around to eventually tie the game 6-6 at the break. Saint Joseph's scored twice in a 10-second span midway through the frame, before knotting the score at 6-6 with a tally by Giradrdin with less than 10 seconds to play in the half.
The home team carried the momentum into the third and scored four times to complete a 7-0 run, covering the second and third quarters, for a 10-6 advantage. Dean was able to stop the run when
Diego Alvarez-Segee tallied his second goal of the game with 35 seconds left for a 10-7 deficit heading into the final stanza.
Alvarez-Segee notched a hat trick to begin the scoring in the fourth and pull Dean within 10-8. Saint Joseph's then received a goal from Michaud and two from Will Levesque to regain control at 13-8. Alvarez-Segee added another for the Bulldogs but was answered by Michaud's fifth goal to keep the margin at five.
