Colby-Sawyer Takes Two from Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass.– April 7, 2024 – The Dean College baseball team was defeated by Colby-Sawyer twice on Sunday. The Chargers won game one 10-0 in seven innings in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup and took game two 3-0, which did not count towards the GNAC standings.

The Bulldogs (3-15, 0-8 GNAC) play at Bridgewater State on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (11-7, 2-0 GNAC) travels to Lasell tomorrow afternoon.

GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 10, Dean 0 (7 inn.)

Colby-Sawyer scored four times in the opening inning. Sophomores Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) and Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) each knocked in a pair with hits for the Chargers.

The Chargers added a run in the second on a Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) single to right field.

The visitors took a 6-0 in the top of the third when Cruz crossed home on a grounder.

Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) hit a sac fly in the fourth to put Colby-Sawyer in front 7-0.

Sophomore pitcher Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) helped his own cause in the top of the fifth with a 2-run single to left for a 9-0 Chargers lead.

Watson knocked in another run with an RBI groundout in the seventh for a 10-0 advantage.

Sophomore Colin Favata (Syosset, N.Y.) recorded two of the Bulldogs' three hits.

Cruz led the Chargers at the plate going 4-for-4 with three doubles, two RBIs and two runs.

Watson earned the win with six scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO – Colby-Sawyer 3, Dean 0

After a scoreless first inning, Colby-Sawyer took advantage of a couple of Dean miscues with two unearned runs.

O'Brien added an insurance run with a long ball in the top of the third.

Senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) earned the win with four scoreless innings for Colby-Sawyer.

Sophomore Jacob Koble (Narragansett, R.I.) struck out seven in six innings and surrendered just one earned run for Dean. Sophomore Zach Handfield (Auburn, Mass.) kept the Bulldogs close by striking out the side in an inning of relief.  

Sophomore Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs.

O'Brien and Dennis each had two hits for the Chargers.
