Bulldogs Sweep Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt.– April 16, 2024 – The Dean College baseball team swept a doubleheader at Norwich on Tuesday afternoon.

Dean won the first game 8-7, which counted towards the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings, and the second game 7-0.

The Bulldogs (7-18, 1-11 GNAC) continue a week of road games tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch at Brandeis. Norwich drops to 6-20 overall and 4-6 in the GNAC.

GAME ONE – Dean 8, Norwich 7

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk by senior Kyle Lancaster (Dartmouth, Mass.) and a 2-run single from sophomore Jacob Paschetto (East Longmeadow, Mass.).

Norwich scored twice in the second on a couple of putouts to pull within 3-2.

Dean got the two runs back in the third when sophomore Colin Favata (Syosset, N.Y.) hit a 2-run double to the gap to score Paschetto and junior Joey Bossinas (Ossining, N.Y.).

The Cadets tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of RBI singles and a sac fly.

After four scoreless innings, first-year Rylan Secovich (Southwick, Mass.) scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the top of the eighth for a 6-5 Dean advantage.

Norwich answered with a sac fly in the bottom half to knot the score at 6-6.

Dean took an 8-6 lead in the ninth thanks to a Bossinas RBI triple and a Paschetto RBI single.

The Cadets did not go quietly as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out. Sophomore Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) came on in relief and induced a sac fly to center that scored Norwich's seventh run. However, the runner on second tried to advance to third on the play and was ruled out when Dean appealed that he left early to end the game.

Giambra picked up his second save of the season and added three hits at the plate.

Paschetto finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

GAME TWO – Dean 7, Norwich 0

The Dean pitching staff was the story in game two as five pitchers combined for a 2-hitter. Connor Nooney (Long Beach, N.Y.), Zach Handfield (Auburn, Mass.), Dylan Altermatt (North Branford, Conn.), Kiefer Culligan (South Windsor, Conn.) and Owen Critchley (Dayton, Maine) combined for the shutout.

The Bulldogs plated three runs in the fourth with the big hit coming from junior James Galati (Eastchester, N.Y.) who knocked in two on a single up the middle.

In the fifth, sophomore Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) belted his first collegiate home run, a 2-run homer to right, to put Dean on top 5-0.

Bossinas knocked in senior Seth Cruz (East Freetown, Mass.) in the sixth for a 6-0 Dean lead.

Secovich came around on a wild pitch with the Bulldogs' seventh run in the seventh.

Giambra had three more hits, while eight other Bulldogs had one hit each.
