Women's Lacrosse Topped by UMass Dartmouth

FRANKLIN, Mass. – March 26, 2024 – The Dean College women's lacrosse team was defeated by UMass Dartmouth, 16-6, on a cold and misty Tuesday afternoon at Grant Field. 

Dean (1-6) will play its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division game on Saturday at home against Elms at 3 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (5-2) will host Eastern Connecticut State on Friday at 7 p.m. to begin Little East Conference action.

Junior Natalie Peterson (Hudson, Mass.) led the Bulldogs with three goals, an assist and four draw controls. Junior Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) registered a goal and an assist, while sophomore Emma Mock (Tunkhannock, Pa.) and first-year Caroline Ramsey (Shreveport, La.) each found the back of the net.

The Corsairs were led by senior Melanny Sanchez Alvarez (Stamford, Conn.). She posted four goals, two assists, six caused turnovers, five ground balls and four draw controls. Senior Widline Thomas (Stamford, Conn.) added four goals and an assist. First-year Lily Nees (Rehoboth, Mass.) contributed a hat trick.

UMass Dartmouth sophomore goalie Kelsie Couto (Assonet, Mass.) made three saves to earn her fifth win of the season. Dean sophomore goalie Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, R.I.) had nine saves in the loss.

The visitors scored six times in the first quarter with three goals from Sanchez Alvarez and a pair from Nees.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal by Ramsey. After UMass Dartmouth scored the next two for an 8-1 lead, Dean answered with three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 8-4. The Corsairs responded by scoring twice in the final 20 seconds for a 10-4 advantage at the half.

UMass Dartmouth added to its lead in the third by outscoring Dean 5-1 for a 15-5 margin heading into the final frame. Thomas had two goals for the Corsairs.

In a low scoring fourth, both teams added a goal to their total to account for the 16-6 final.

Each team took advantage of their odd-player chances four player-up goals apiece.
