Three Bulldogs Net Hat Tricks in 13-9 Win at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – March 20, 2024 – The Dean College men's lacrosse team earned a 13-9 road win at Norwich on a cold and snowy Wednesday night. Today's game did not count towards the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings.

Dean (6-1, 2-0 GNAC, 1-0 GNAC South), who won its sixth game in a row, travels to GNAC North opponent Rivier on Saturday for a noon start. Norwich (4-4, 2-0 GNAC, 1-0 GNAC North) is scheduled to play at Albertus Magnus on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Senior Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) led a balanced Dean scoring attack with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) scored a game-high four goals. Junior Owen Brine (Lebanon, N.H.) was the third Bulldog with a hat trick to go with an assist and four ground balls. First-year Manny Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) added two goals, while senior Tyler Benedetto (Jupiter, Fla.) went 13-of-23 in the faceoff circle with a goal and eight ground balls.

Norwich was led by Drew Fleury's three goals. Mitchell McKay and Tyler Seidel added two goals apiece.

Dean first-year Elijah Beland (Augusta, Maine) earned the win in goal with 10 saves. Thomas Hopkins kept the Cadets close with 23 saves.

The teams traded scoring in the first with each side finding the back of the net twice.

In the second, the Bulldogs outscored the home team 5-3 to take a 7-5 advantage at the half. Speirs and Diego Alvarez-Segee each had two goals to help Dean build the lead.

After a goal by Brine to open the third, Norwich responded with a pair from Fleury to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 1:21 to play in the frame. Manny Alvarez-Segee put the Bulldogs back on top by a deuce with 12 seconds left. Benedetto took the ensuing faceoff down the field and scored, seven seconds later, to give Dean a comfortable 10-7 lead heading into the final quarter.

Brine and Speirs pushed the Dean advantage to 12-7 early in the fourth. Norwich fought back with two goals of their own in a 1:30 minute stretch, but Speirs stopped the run at 5:29 to put the visitors back in front by four.
