MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Dean College baseball team began the 2024 season in South Carolina with seven games at the Ripken Experience.
The initial slate had eight games, but Saturday's contest against Hilbert was rained out.
The Bulldogs were able to get the night game in against Fredonia but fell 8-3. First-year
Nathan Suncar (Boston, Mass.) brought home two runs on a bases loaded walk and an RBI double.
On Sunday, Dean was defeated by FDU-Florham, 10-1, in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Sophomore
Jacob Paschetto (East Longmeadow, Mass.) knocked in sophomore
Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) in the ninth for the team's lone run. Sophomore
Zach Handfield (Auburn, Mass.) tossed a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts.
The Bulldogs then dropped both ends of a doubleheader to McDaniel by scores of 17-1 and 20-3. Paschetto, senior
Seth Cruz (East Freetown, Mass.) and sophomore
Luke Fahey (Glastonbury, Conn.) each had two hits in game one. In game two, junior
Joey Bossinas (Ossining, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run.
On Wednesday, Dean swept a twin bill against Olivet to put the Bulldogs' record at 2-4 through six games. In game one, the Bulldogs started with a statement as
Nathan Suncar blasted a grand slam in the first inning. Olivet got single runs in the second and fifth before taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Suncar did it again as he belted a two-run homer to give the Bulldogs the lead. Dean added four more runs in the frame with a Giambra two-run single, a
Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) RBI single and a Paschetto RBI single. Handfield got out of a jam in the top of the seventh to keep the Comets off the board and earn the 10-5 victory. The win was also first-year head coach
Endy Morales' first victory.
In game two against Olivet, the Bulldogs used a 12-run third inning to secure a 14-3 win. Fahey had a homerun, four RBIs and two runs scored. Giambra and senior
Kyle Lancaster (Dartmouth, Mass.) each knocked in a pair. Paschetto was on base four times, hit a 2-run homer and scored three runs.
Dean wrapped up the trip with a 19-7 loss to Mount Aloysius on Thursday. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore
Nick Amendolara (Bayville, N.Y.) and a pair of fielder's choices. Mount Aloysius took a 5-3 lead in the top of the third, before Dean responded with four runs in the bottom half for a 7-5 lead. Suncar knocked in a pair with a double in the inning. After three scoreless innings, the Mounties plated two in the seventh, three in the eighth and nine in the ninth for the 19-7 final. Suncar finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Sophomore
Delvin Maisonet (Glen Cove, N.Y.) also drove in two runs. Goss had a pair of hits and a run scored.
