Bulldogs Tripped Up at Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – February 7, 2024 – The Dean College women's basketball team fell on the road to Mitchell, 76-44, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Wednesday evening.

Dean (2-18, 0-10 GNAC) returns home on Saturday to host Rivier at 1 p.m. Mitchell (4-15, 2-9 GNAC) plays at Saint Joseph's (ME) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

First-year Makayla Swan (Middlebury, Vt.) poured in a season best 16 points to lead Dean. Senior Cat Thomas (Woodbridge, Conn.) and junior Maranda Cournoyer (Millville, Mass.) scored six points apiece. Thomas added seven rebounds. First-year Kendrah Doane (New Salem, Mass.) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Mitchell's Yasmine Santos recorded a triple-double with 34 points, 18 rebounds and 10 steals. Jamya Beddoe and Alexia Watson contributed 15 points apiece.

1st Quarter
  • The first frame was back-and-forth and featured four ties.
  • The game was tied at 15-15 after a Cournoyer layup pulled the Bulldogs even with 1:12 to play.
  • Mitchell scored the final five points of the quarter to take a 20-15 lead.  
  • Swan led the Bulldogs with six points.
2nd Quarter
  • The Mariners began the second with 11 straight points to go in front 31-15.
  • Mitchell outscored Dean 18-10 for a 38-25 halftime advantage. Santos had 10 to lead all players.
3rd Quarter
  • The home team added to the lead with a 25-14 discrepancy on the scoreboard in the third.
  • Swan went 4-of-6 from the floor for eight points for Dean.
  • The Bulldogs shot the ball well at over 41%, but Mitchell went 12-of-14 from the free throw line to build the lead.
  • Santos scored 10 for Mitchell.   
4th Quarter
  • In a low scoring final quarter, Mitchell came away with a 13-5 edge in points en route to the 76-44 victory.
