FRANKLIN, Mass.- The Dean College Bulldogs dropped a tough contest to Simmons University, falling 7-1 on Tuesday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at Grant Field.
Despite a 9-1 shot advantage for the Sharks, the Bulldogs held the visitors' offensive onslaught in check throughout the first-half. surrendering only goal over the first two periods. The lone tally came from
Sydney Gonyea, who scored her GNAC leading 23rd goal. First-year keeper
Sara Gardner (Hampstead, Md.) made eight first half saves for the Bulldogs.
In the second half, Simmons pulled away. The Sharks scored back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the second half, one from Gonyea (her 24th of the year), and another from
Hailey Brisson, assisted by Gonyea, to create a three goal advantage. Later in the third,
Ainslee Strout scored on a penalty stroke to increase the Simmons lead to 4-0 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth period, Simmons scored three goals, one from
Emila Elko at the beginning of the quarter, and two back-to-back from
Hannah Groves, to swell their advantage to 7-0. Dean got one back in the closing minutes off a beautiful set play on a penalty corner. Junior
Sydnee Ramos (New Bedford, Mass.) collected a pass and centered it towards the goal, where sophomore
Jordan Boelig (Tilton, N.H.) found the pass and flipped it backward for the goal. The goal was Boelig's first of the season, to go with two assists.
Gardner finished with nine saves and four goals allowed, while
Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, R.I.) played the final 20 minutes. making two saves.
Dean (7-10 overall, 4-6 GNAC) is back in action on Saturday when they host Lasell University at 9 a.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities.
