Strong Second Half Lifts Dean over Colby-Sawyer, 4-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 30, 2023 – The Dean College men's soccer team pushed its win streak to five in a row after Saturday's 4-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road win at Colby-Sawyer.

The Bulldogs (7-2-1, 5-2-1 GNAC) return home on Tuesday to host Anna Maria at 3:30 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (2-5-3, 1-3-3 GNAC) travels to Emmanuel on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Saints.

In the 37th minute, the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Sean Doherty (Chelmsford, Mass.) converted the try with his first goal of the season for the 1-0 Dean lead.

The Chargers took the ensuing kickoff into their offensive zone and scored the equalizer 13 seconds later. Ryan Wilson ripped a shot into the corner of the net from the top of the box.

Dean answered in the 52nd minute with Doherty's second goal of the match. Sophomore Jake Richard (Townsend, Mass.) set up a breakaway chance with a nice through ball to Doherty in the right side of the box. Doherty finished the opportunity into the left side of the net past the oncoming keeper.

In the 67th minute, the Bulldogs doubled their lead when junior Bennett Walsh (Springfield, Mass.) sent a pass from midfield to an open sophomore Melvin Alves (Brockton, Mass.). The Colby-Sawyer keeper came out to challenge, but Alves took a left-footed shot and scored into the left corner of the goal for his second tally of the season.

The Bulldogs added an insurance goal with less than four minutes to play. Sophomore Chris Tunley (Las Vegas, Nev.) received a pass from junior Tyreese Ferguson (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) at the near post and flicked the ball past the keeper for his third goal of the year.

Dean senior goalie Alberto Gonzalez Del Rio (Madrid, Spain) improved to 6-0 after allowing one goal. Yener Bartolon had seven saves in the loss for Colby-Sawyer.

The Bulldogs had a 16-7 advantage in shots and a 6-0 margin in corner kicks.
