Women's Soccer Drops 4-2 Match to Colby-Sawyer

FRANKLIN, Mass. – September 27, 2023 – The Dean College women's soccer team fell to Colby-Sawyer, 4-2, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Grant Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (4-4-1, 3-3-1 GNAC) begin a 4-game road trip on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Norwich. Colby-Sawyer (7-1-2, 6-1 GNAC) travels to Johnson & Wales on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Wildcats.

Dean junior Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored twice in the opening nine minutes of the match to give the home team a 2-0 advantage. Her first goal came off a rebound from junior Lea Bettencourt's (Peabody, Mass.) free kick that ricocheted off the crossbar. Medeiros' second tally was a long shot from 25-yards out that beat the keeper to the right.

The Chargers broke through in the 29th minute when senior Sam Bishop (Windham, N.H.) was driving into the right side of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.

Colby-Sawyer knotted the score in the 35th minute. Senior Kara Keiper (Peterborough, N.H.) broke free from the Dean backline and beat the goalie on a breakaway.

Less than five minutes later, the conference's leading scorer junior Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) added to her total with her 11th of the season which gave the Chargers a 3-2 lead.

The visitors added a goal, seven minutes into the second half, to take a 4-2 lead. Keiper sent a corner kick towards the goal mouth which deflected off a Dean defender and into the net for her eighth goal of the season.

Junior goalie Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) took the loss but made 15 saves to keep the Bulldogs close. Alexis Lebreton (Bangor, Maine) was credited with the win for the Chargers with no goals allowed in 46 minutes of action.
