FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 8, 2023 – The Dean College baseball team won both ends of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Albertus Magnus. Dean walked off with a 7-6 win in game one and scored the game-winning run in the eighth to hang on for a 4-3 win in game two.
Dean (4-18, 2-6 GNAC) will play at Framingham State on Monday for a makeup game against the Rams at 3:30 p.m. Albertus Magnus drops to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in the GNAC.
GAME ONE – Dean 7, Albertus Magnus 6
The Falcons scored a couple of unearned runs in their first at-bat. Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) had an RBI groundout and was followed by a Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) RBI double.
Dean quickly responded to tie the game in the bottom of the first with two runs. Sophomore Joseph Bossinas (Ossining, N.Y.) doubled in senior
Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) and then came around on a run-scoring single by first-year
Nick Amendolara (Bayville, N.Y.).
After a scoreless second, the Bulldogs took a lead when Bossinas scored on a triple by Amendolara.
In the top of the fourth, Albertus retook the lead by scoring twice, but Dean junior pitcher
Kyle Simpson (Prospect, Conn.) minimized the damage by retiring the next three batters, two by strikeout, to leave the bases loaded. Seniors Alex Kozlowski (Shelton, Conn.) and Ron Losacano (Old Lyme, Conn.) had RBI singles in the inning.
The Falcons pushed the lead to 6-3 with a couple of bases loaded walks in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, first-year
Jacob Paschetto (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a triple to the right center gap to bring around Dovidio to cut the deficit to 6-4. Paschetto then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5.
In the Bulldogs' final at-bat and with two outs,
Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) knocked in Amendolara to tie the game at 6-6.
Seth Cruz (East Freetown, Mass.) then stepped in and delivered the game-winning hit that scored
DeMarcus King (Austin, Texas) who was on as a pinch runner. Cruz finished the game 3 for 3.
First-year
Hunter Espinosa (East Haddam, Conn.) earned his first collegiate victory after a scoreless top of the seventh.
Simpson started the game for Dean - 4 IP, 4 R (1 ER), 5 H, 4 K
Christian Corliss (Burlington, Conn.) took the loss by giving up two unearned runs in the seventh.
GAME TWO – Dean 4, Albertus Magnus 3
After a scoreless first inning, Albertus scored a run in the second on a sac fly from Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.), but left the bases loaded.
Sullivan singled in Losacano in the fourth to put the Falcons on top by a 2-0 margin.
Dean recorded its first hit, in the sixth inning, off the bat of Amendolara. Albertus freshman pitcher AJ Rooks (Coventry, Conn.) was able to thwart the rally and strand two runners.
The Albertus lead went to 3-0 in the top of the seventh. Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.) knocked in Sullivan, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch, with a single to left.
The Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Dovidio hit a sac fly to left that scored Cruz, who doubled to begin the inning. Amendolara then pulled Dean within one with an infield single to deep short that scored pinch-runner

In the bottom of the eighth, first-year
Tyler Giambra (Prospect, Conn.) began the frame by drawing a walk. He moved to second on a sac bunt by Cruz. Giambra then scored the game-tying run on a double to the gap by first-year
Gavin Goss (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.). Goss would later score the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
Espinosa worked the final two innings of the game and allowed just one hit and struck out two to pick up his second win of the day and season.
Rooks did not factor into the decision after 6 IP, 1 H, 4 BB, 8 K for the Falcons.
