Baseball Swept by Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – April 2, 2023 - The Dean College baseball team was defeated by Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats won the first game 9-0 and game two 2-0.  

Dean travels to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a twin bill beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday.  

GAME ONE – JWU 9, Dean 0 (7 inn.)

JWU began the day's first game with a run on a Jack Olbert RBI single in the first.

In the third, Xavier Botelho cleared the bases with a triple to right to give the home team a 4-0 lead.

The Wildcats added six runs to their total in the sixth, including a 3-run triple by Miles Kelly.

Aidan Vining closed the door in the seventh for the complete game 2-hitter with eight strikeouts for JWU.

Senior Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) and sophomore Trent Bender (Binghamton, N.Y.) each had a hit for the Bulldogs.  

GAME TWO – JWU 2, Dean 0 (9 inn.)

The Wildcats plated a run in the first on a Dean miscue.

JWU added an insurance run in the fourth on an RBI single by AJ Braid.

The pitching staffs kept each team in the game throughout the 9-inning affair.

First-year Mason Neumann (Middletown, Conn.) was saddled with the loss for Dean after tossing 5 IP. He surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits with four strikeouts. First-year Jared Dussman (Maplewood, N.J.) threw three innings of scoreless relief with one hit and two strikeouts.

Kyle Cutler went the distance for the Wildcats, giving up five hits and striking out seven.  

Dean outhit JWU 5-3 with five different players recording one hit, including Dovidio and Bender.
