Bulldogs Edged by Colby-Sawyer, 17-12

FRANKLIN, Mass. – March 31, 2023 – The Dean College women's lacrosse team was edged by Colby-Sawyer, 17-12, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest Friday afternoon.

Dean (4-5, 3-3 GNAC) resumes action next week on Wednesday at Anna Maria. Colby-Sawyer (6-4, 4-2 GNAC) travels to Regis on Wednesday.

Senior Jazzy Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.) led the Bulldogs with four goals. Senior Maire Brown (Huntington, N.Y.), sophomore Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) and sophomore Haley Gaunt (Johnston, R.I.) each scored twice. Medeiros added four caused turnovers. Senior Sierra Cardenas (Warwick, R.I.) picked up a team best five ground balls.

Colby-Sawyer received three goals from Heather Hanson (Marstons Mills, Mass.), Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.), Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) and Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.). Hanson added eight draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Sophomore Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) registered game-highs of six ground balls and five caused turnovers.

First-year goalie Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, R.I.) had 17 saves for the Bulldogs. Sophomore AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) earned the win with nine saves.

Dean led 3-2 after the first quarter with goals from Gaunt, Medeiros and Sztyler-Magee.

In the second, each team took 10 shots, but Colby-Sawyer outscored the Bulldogs 5-3 to lead 7-6 at halftime. Kuhlthau scored all three of her goals in the quarter.

Dean first-year Alisha Caldeira (West Bridgewater, Mass.) scored 35 seconds into the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Colby-Sawyer then scored the next five goals, including a pair each from Hanson and Stevens, to take control. Dean battled back with goals from Gaunt and Sztyler-Magee to pull the home team within 12-9, but the Chargers scored twice in the final minute of the frame to lead 14-9 after 45 minutes.

Each team scored three times in the final quarter to make the final score 17-12.
