NASHUA, N.H. – March 18, 2023 – The Dean College women's lacrosse team continued its best start with an 18-14 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory at Rivier on Saturday afternoon.
Dean improves to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the GNAC. The Bulldogs return home on Wednesday to host Saint Joseph's College at 4 p.m. Rivier (2-1, 1-1 GNAC) travels to Emmanuel on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start.
Senior
Maire Brown (Huntington, N.Y.) led all players with 10 goals to go with eight draw controls. Sophomore
Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) notched a hat trick with seven ground balls and six draw controls. Senior
Jazzy Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.) finished with two goals, an assist and a game best nine ground balls.
Rivier was led by Sarah Lachance's six points on five goals and an assist. Rachel Hinkley scored three times. Cassie Hemmerdinger added two goals, 11 draw controls, six ground balls and six caused turnovers.
First-year goalie
Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, R.I.) got the win with 27 saves. Margaret Smith had 17 saves for Rivier in the loss.
In a high-scoring first quarter, the Bulldogs held a 7-5 edge on the scoreboard. Brown scored four times for Dean, while Lachance had two goals.
A Hemmerdinger goal to begin the second pulled the home team within one. Dean then answered with three goals, two by Brown, to push the cushion to four goals. Rivier add a goal in the final two minutes to make the score 10-7 at the half in favor of the Bulldogs.
Rivier closed the gap by outscoring Dean 6-4 in the third. The Raiders received two goals each from Lachance and Hinkley to cut the deficit to 14-13 heading into the final quarter.
Dean put together a rally and scored the first four goals of the fourth, with the final one coming at 2:08, to put the game out of reach. Rivier tacked on a late goal to account for the 18-14 final. Medeiros scored twice in less than a minute to help Dean secure the victory.
