Bulldogs Stunned by Saint Joseph's in Overtime, 11-10

FRANKLIN, Mass. – March 18, 2023 – Saint Joseph's College scored four times in the final 2:02 and then in overtime to comeback to stun the Dean College men's lacrosse team, 11-10, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both teams.

Dean (3-1, 0-1 GNAC) will look to rebound on Tuesday when the team welcomes Lasell to Grant Field at 3 p.m. SJC (2-5, 1-0 GNAC) travels to Southern Maine on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game against the Huskies.

Junior Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) led Dean with six points on two goals and four assists. Junior Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) and senior Greg Centeio (Fairhaven, Mass.) each finished with three goals. Junior Tyler Benedetto (Jupiter, Fla.) won 17-of-24 faceoffs and had 11 ground balls.

The Monks turned in a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring twice and three others finding the back of the net one time. Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) and Matt Denman (Brentwood, N.H.) scored twice, while Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) had two goals and three assists. Sophomore defender Anthony Samiotes (Hampstead, N.H.) caused seven turnovers.

Dean senior goalie James Rollins (Old Lyme, Conn.) had seven saves in the loss, while SJC goalie Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) stopped 13 shots to secure the victory.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start with a 4-1 lead in the first 15 minutes of action.

Dean increased its lead to 7-2 by halftime with a 3-1 margin in the second quarter, including goals by three different players.

In the third, the Monks cut the deficit to 8-6 with 2:38 on the clock. Dean then got an important goal right before time expired, off the stick of Jaden Wise (Belchertown, Mass.), to give the Bulldogs a 9-6 advantage heading into the fourth.

Alvarez-Segee scored the first goal of the final frame to put the home team on top by four. The next nine minutes went scoreless before Saint Joseph's rallied to score four times in the final 2:02 to send the game into overtime.

Goodfellow ended things for the Monks early in overtime with his 12th goal of the season.
