Women's Basketball Falls to Elms

FRANKLIN, Mass. – February 4, 2023 – The Dean College women's basketball team played its third game in five days Saturday afternoon. Elms came away with an 81-38 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory.

Dean (0-20, 0-15 GNAC) is off until next Saturday when they travel to the University of Saint Joseph for a 1 p.m. tip. Elms (9-13, 4-11 GNAC) will host Johnson & Wales on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

First-years Natasha Brito (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Caitlin Cooper (Amherst, N.H.) led the Bulldogs with seven points apiece. Sophomore Cat Thomas (Woodbridge, Conn.) pulled down a team best 11 rebounds and added four steals. Sophomore Tori Viau (Johnston, R.I.) chipped in with six points.

Elms first-year Kayla Jackson (Saugus, Mass.) shot 7-of-11 and finished with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, Conn.) scored 15, while Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Soliyana Asfaw (Livingston, N.J.) also reached double figures with 10 points each.

1st Quarter
  • Elms began the game with a 6-3 run.
  • Dean pulled within 8-6 after a Maranda Cournoyer (Millville, Mass.) jumper with 2:47 left in the first.
  • The Blazers ended the quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 19-10 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Elms shot 7-of-17, while Dean went 3-of-12.
2nd Quarter
  • After Elms pushed its lead to 12, midway through the second, a three-point play by Cooper pulled Dean to within 31-24.
  • The Blazers went on a 9-0 run to close the half and take a 40-24 lead into the break.
  • Jackson scored 10 points in the quarter to lead Elms, while Brito put in seven for Dean.   
3rd Quarter
  • The visitors pulled away in the third with an 18-5 margin on the scoreboard. Elms shot 7-of-15 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.  
  • Thomas had five of her 11 rebounds in the third to help Dean to an 8-7 edge on the boards.
4th Quarter
  • Elms closed the game with a 23-9 showing in the fourth quarter to earn the road victory.
  • Asfaw had eight points for the Blazers.
