NEWTON, Mass. – February 14, 2023 – The Dean College women's basketball team dropped its final Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season road game at Lasell Tuesday evening by a score of 80-37.
Dean (0-22, 0-17 GNAC) will celebrate senior day on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Regis College. Lasell (6-18, 5-12 GNAC) concludes the regular season with a 1 p.m. road game at Albertus Magnus on Saturday.
Sophomore
Tori Viau (Johnston, R.I.) led Dean with 12 points, including 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Senior
Allie Bezio (Wellfleet, Mass.) added seven points, while sophomore
Maranda Cournoyer (Millville, Mass.) contributed four points, four rebounds and three assists.
Lasell senior Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) poured in a game best 17 points. First-year Shirle Major (Worcester, Mass.) recorded 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. First-year Laura Johnson (Groton, Conn.) posted a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. First-year Brenna Graber (Troy, N.Y.) was the fourth Laser in double figures with 10 points to go with five steals.
The opening five minutes of the contest saw each team working hard to find the range on the offensive end of the floor as Lasell held a 7-2 lead. The Lasers turned the intensity up and outscored Dean 18-4 down the stretch, including three long balls, to take a 25-6 after the first quarter.
Cournoyer scored the first bucket of the second quarter for the Bulldogs, but Lasell responded with a 13-2 run to take a 38-10 lead midway through the frame. The teams traded buckets over the next couple of minutes, with four from Viau, to make the score 43-18. Johnson converted a layup at the buzzer for Lasell to send the home side into halftime with a 47-21 lead.
Viau hit a couple of three-pointers in the third quarter for Dean, but Lasell finished the stanza with an 18-10 advantage in scoring to lead 65-31 after 30 minutes.
The Lasers added to their lead with a 15-6 showing in the fourth quarter.
Lasell hit eight three-pointers in the contest, while Dean when 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
