BROOKLINE, Mass. – November 12, 2023 – Dean College senior
AJ Weston (Kansas City, Mo.) made a layup as time expired to lift the men's basketball team past the University of Maine-Presque Isle (UMPI), 72-70, in Sunday's season opener at Hellenic College.
The Bulldogs (1-0) will play a pair of home games this week beginning on Tuesday against Lesley at 5 p.m. before welcoming Rhode Island College on Friday at 6 p.m. UMPI (0-2) hosts Southern Maine on Saturday.
Dean led 70-62 after a
Jayden Madise (Palmdale, Calif.) dunk with 3:37 left to play. UMPI stormed back with an 8-0 run, capped by a Myles Jones lay-in to tie the game at 70-70 with 10 seconds left to play.
The Bulldogs took the ensuing possession down the floor and Weston drove the right side of the lane and made the layup for the game-winner at the buzzer.
Weston led all players with 19 points for the Bulldogs. Madise finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Junior
Ja'maine Davenport (Mays Landing, N.J.) also reached double figures with 10 points. Junior
Tyler Newsom (Pendleton, Ore.) filled the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Doug McCalla and Dany Harris led the Owls with 15 points apiece. Harris notched the double-double with 12 rebounds. Gilbert Jean contributed 14 points.
Each team made 31 field goals in the game and a pair of three-pointers. Dean had an edge in free throws making 8-of-11, while UMPI converted 6-of-11.
