Albertus Magnus Outlasts Dean, 3-1

FRANKLIN, Mass. – October 25, 2023 – The Dean College women's volleyball team was edged by Albertus Magnus, 3-1, by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-20 and 26-24 in a tightly contested Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match Wednesday night.

Dean (6-20, 2-10 GNAC) will host a non-conference tri-match on Saturday against Clark and Mass. Maritime beginning at 11 a.m. Albertus Magnus (7-17, 2-9 GNAC) hosts a conference tri-match on Saturday against Lasell and Rivier.

Junior Janai Price (Providence, R.I.) led Dean with career-highs of 11 kills and 25 digs. Senior Sari Albury (Nassau, Bahamas) hit .429 to finish with nine kills and six blocks. Sophomore Skylar Raskevitz (Easthampton, Mass.) contributed 19 digs. Junior Emily Ball (Feeding Hills, Mass.) tallied nine kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Carly Rettberg (Haddam, Conn.) registered 20 assists and 14 digs.

Sophomore Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) posted a match best 29 kills to go with 20 digs. Sophomore setter Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) ran the offense with 36 assists. Senior libero Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) posted a match high 28 digs.

The first set see-sawed and featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. The Bulldogs led 22-20, but Albertus Magnus got strong attacking down the stretch to clinch the set 25-23. Pelaez led all players with six kills.

The Falcons led 23-17 in the second set but saw Dean rally with multiple kills by Albury and Ball to complete the comeback for the 26-24 win. Albury had five kills, while Pelaez added another eight for Albertus Magnus.

Albertus rebounded with a 25-20 win in the third behind five kills from Pelaez and five from junior Joismar Aviles (Hatillo, Puerto Rico). Price had four kills to lead Dean.

The Falcons carried the momentum into the fourth and led 24-19. Dean did not go quietly and clawed back to tie the score at 24-24. The visitors scored the next two points to clinch the set and the match. Pelaez had 10 of the Falcons' 14 kills in the frame.
