NORTHFIELD, Vt. – April 6, 2022 – The Dean College men's lacrosse team was edged by Norwich University, 17-14, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest Wednesday afternoon.
Dean has its three-game win streak snapped to drop to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Bulldogs return home on Saturday for a noon game against Regis. Norwich pushes its win streak to six and improves to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the GNAC. The Cadets host Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Sophomore
Alec Speirs (Old Lyme, Conn.) tallied five goals and an assist to lead Dean. Sophomore
Diego Alvarez-Segee (Saugus, Mass.) recorded four goals, two assists and seven ground balls. Junior
Cameron D'Angelo (Chelmsford, Mass.) added a couple of goals. Sophomore
Tyler Benedetto (Jupiter, Fla.) won 22-of-33 faceoffs and picked up a game best 17 ground balls.
Sophomore Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) and senior Jake Andrews-Pestana (Napa, Calif.) each had a hat trick to lead the Norwich goal scorers. Senior Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) tallied a team best six points on two goals and four assists.
Dean senior
Alexander Govoni (Lakeville, Mass.) had 14 saves in the loss. Norwich freshman goalie Andrew Vernon (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the win with 13 saves.
The first quarter had a pair of scoring runs by each team. Norwich began the contest with five-straight scores, including a pair from Jack Anzalone. Dean responded by ending the frame with four goals to only trail by one after 15 minutes. Speirs scored two for the Bulldogs including one with five seconds on the clock.
In a low scoring second quarter, the Cadets took a 7-4 lead with a couple of goals before Speirs scored his third goal of the game to pull Dean within 7-5 heading into the halftime break.
Norwich added to its lead with two goals in the first four minutes of the third, 9-5. A Speirs goal cut the deficit to 9-6. The Cadets then scored a couple of goals, sandwiched around a
Matthew Pacheco (Warwick, R.I.) goal, to lead 11-7 after 45 minutes.
Dean's
Greg Centeio (Fairhaven, Mass.) opened the scoring in the fourth to make the game 11-8, but Norwich answered with a 5-1 run to take a 16-9 advantage. With 5:11 left to play, the Bulldogs chipped away with three goals, two by Alvarez-Segee, in a span of 1:31 to pull within 16-12. Norwich stopped the run with a goal at 1:16. Dean added a pair of late goals to make the final 17-14.
