FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 16, 2022 – The Dean College baseball team lost both ends of Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats won game one 21-9 and game two 11-6.
Dean goes to 7-19 overall and 5-6 in the GNAC. The Bulldogs are slated to host Trinity on Tuesday. JWU improves to 10-19 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Wildcats return home on Tuesday to host Roger Williams.
GAME ONE – JWU 21, DEAN 9
Junior Griffin Snyder (Marietta, Ga.) put the Wildcats on top in the first with a three-run homer to left field.
Dean got a pair back in the bottom of the inning on a
Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) two-run single up the middle.
After a scoreless second inning, JWU plated six in the third on seven hits and an error.
The Bulldogs benefited from an error in the bottom of the third for a run but trailed 9-3 after three.
The Wildcats would go on to score at least two runs in each of the final four innings to put 21 on the board.
Dean had a run in the fourth on a
Ryan Gallagher (Methuen, Mass.) solo home run and then scored five in the fifth, but JWU held the home team scoreless in the last two frame for the 21-9 win.
Snyder ended the game 3-for-6 with a pair of 3-run homers to lead the Wildcats. Sophomore EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) also hit a 3-run homer and scored four runs.
Dovidio and senior
Matty Troy (Norwalk, Conn.) each went 2-for-4 for Dean.
GAME TWO – JWU 11, DEAN 6
After a scoreless first inning, JWU took a 3-0 lead in the second on a pair of solo home runs from Thorin Sanchez-Guerra (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Riley Hasson (South Portland, Maine) and an RBI single from Trevor Juan (Bolton, Conn.).
In the fourth, JWU used the long ball again to take a 7-0 lead. Juan belted a two-run homer to left and Xavier Botelho (Rehoboth, Mass.) added a solo shot to left center.
Dean responded in the bottom half with four runs of their own on three hits and an error. Senior
Dan Lilja (Lynn, Mass.) knocked in a run with a double, while freshman
Cam Watkins (East Haddam, Conn.) brought in Lilja with a single to left.
The Bulldogs came within a run by scoring twice in the bottom of the six on a
Josh Cerretani (Peabody, Mass.) triple.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to hold on for the 11-6 win.
Lilja finished with a couple of hits for Dean.
