NORTHFIELD, Vt. - April 10, 2022 - The Dean College baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Norwich University on Sunday at Garrity Field. Dean took game one 9-5, but Norwich walked-off with a 6-5 victory in game two.
Dean goes to 6-15 overall and 4-3 in the GNAC. The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround with a twin bill at Lasell on Monday. Norwich is now 12-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
GAME ONE - Dean 9, Norwich 5
In game one, Norwich jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by senior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.).
Freshman
Ryan Desmond (Long Island, N.Y.) knotted the game in the second for the with an RBI single to center.
Dean then erupted for five runs on five hits in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead. Senior
Ryan Gallagher (Methuen, Mass.) had an RBI double in the inning, while
Jesse Rodriguez Jr. (Fontana, Calif.) was credited with two RBIs in the frame.
Norwich answered in the fourth with a pair of runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single by sophomore Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.).
Dean plated three in the seventh on a couple of RBI doubles from Desmond and senior
Josh Cerretani (Peabody, Mass.) and a wild pitch.
The Cadets got a couple back in their last at-bat, but Dean pitcher
Tyler McAloon (Berkley, Mass.) closed the door to earn his second-straight complete game victory.
Five Bulldogs recorded two hits in the game. Cerretani, Desmond and Rodriguez Jr. were among the five and also had two RBIs each.
Hayden Roberge finished 4-for-4 to lead the Cadets.
GAME TWO - Norwich 6, Dean 5
The home team raced out to a 5-0 advantage by scoring four times in the second and once in the third. Nick Beavin had the big hit in the second with a two-run single to center.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth with five runs of their own. Desmond knocked in two, while junior
Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) and senior
Matty Troy (Norwalk, Conn.) had RBI singles.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Cadets loaded the bases and then received the game-winning knock from freshman Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Penn.) for the 6-5 victory.
Freshman
Cam Watkins (East Haddam, Conn.) went 2-for-3, while Dovidio finished 2-for-4.
