Powell's 23 Not Enough as Bulldogs Fall at Johnson & Wales, 66-56

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - February 3, 2022 - Dean College senior Traijan Powell (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) poured in a season-high 23 points, but the Bulldogs dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road game at Johnson & Wales, 66-56.

Dean (5-13, 0-11 GNAC) will conclude a busy week with its third game in five days when Regis comes to Pieri Gymnasium on Saturday at 3 p.m. JWU (7-9, 5-5 GNAC) plays at Lasell on Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip.

Powell was 10-20 from the floor and added five rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Junior Hunter Meyer (Taylor Mill, Ky.) contributed nine points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior Mark Blair (Rosedale, N.Y.) grabbed 11 rebounds, while freshman Dion Zhuta (Middlebury, Conn.) had eight points and four assists in 19 minutes off the bench.

JWU received a game-high 26 points from Josh Zangerle. He went 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. Aireus Raspberry added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Bryan Davis recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The home team held an 18-17 lead with less than six minutes to play in the first. A Powell layup with 3:24 on the clock, pulled Dean within one again at 24-23. JWU finished the finale couple of minutes on a 6-0 run to take a 30-23 lead at the break. JWU made just one more field goal than Dean (11-10) in the frame, but seven were three-pointers. Zangerle was responsible for six of the makes en route to 20 points in the first 20 minutes of action. Powell had 11 to pace the Bulldogs in the first.

The Wildcats began the second half on a 14-2 run and never looked back. With 4:12 left to play, Powell drilled a trey to pull Dean within eight, 55-47, but JWU thwarted a comeback to earn the 66-56 victory.

Dean shot 36.1% and held JWU to 33.9%. JWU did damage from beyond the arc, making 10 threes while Dean made four.
